The Weeping of the Vine
The end of winter is approaching at Finca de Abargues. A winter of scarce rainfall. Our vines have been quietly sleeping. Resting, but at the same time, collecting reserves from their deep roots. Although there has been little rainfall, the plants find what they need. And after this much-needed rest, the soil that nourishes them begins to gradually warm up.
With the change in temperature and the increasing hours of sunshine, our vines begin to “breathe” and slowly awaken. Curiously, the first thing they do when they wake up is cry.
Did you know that this process is called “the weeping of the vine“? This beautiful term is used when the vines begin to mobilize the plant’s reserves and secrete sap, spilling over the pruning cuts, covering and healing those “wounds”. Their “tears” also act as protection for the plants from pests and other diseases. This small miracle will nourish them and lead to the growth of leaves and fruit.
The vineyard is a living being and is adapting in surprising ways. With climate change, the timing has shifted: pruning, budding and harvesting times. We are also adapting, always keeping a close watch, caring for these vines with care, attention and an almost religious dedication year-round.
In spring the show begins. When the first leaves sprout, we must be very vigilant as the magic of a new cycle of life begins.
